Combination Chart in Cognos Report Studio to Compare two Measures and One Dimension

The combination chart is a visualization that combines the features of two different chart types. For example, a bar chart and a line chart both can be combined and represented in just one chart.

In this report, we are going to use sample package “Go Sales (Query)” to compare “Revenue” and “Gross Profit” for each “Product Line”. Here, Revenue and Gross Profit columns are dollar amounts and Product Line is a dimension.

1. Open Report Studio --> select Chart template.

2. In the Chart types, choose a combination chart >> Select "Clustered Bar and Clustered Line" and click OK.

3. The skeleton of the combination chart appears as shown below.

4. Now, add “Product Line” column in the Categories (x-axis).

5. If you want, you can apply sorting for “Product Line” so that the descriptions are displayed in alphabetical ascending order.

Select Chart Node Member --> In the Properties window, click on Sorting and add Product Line to Sort List as shown below.

6. Add “Gross Profit” and “Revenue” columns to the Series (primary axis) as shown below. Please note that, I added “Gross Profit” to Bars and “Revenue” to Line.

7. Apply “Data Format” to show the values in dollars sign for both “Revenue” and “Gross Profit”.

Select “Axis Label” --> Click on “Data Format” in the properties window --> apply "Currency" formatting as shown below.

8. Select “Revenue” column under “Series” >>  select “Show Values” in the properties window >> select options as shown below.

9. Select “Gross Profit” under “Series” >> click on “Palette” in the properties window >> apply a different color to it.

10. Run the report to see the final output.
