Cognos BI Integration with IBM BlueMix dashDB

IBM DashDB is a cloud-based data warehousing platform, specially designed for analytics, advanced reporting and Business Intelligence.  

  1. DashDB is easy to setup, configure and operate.
  2. IBM designed DashDB platform for scalability and high-performance.  
  3. DashDB is compatible with wide range of native and third-party BI tools.
  4. Data can be uploaded into a next-generation columnar in-memory database for fast processing.
DashDB is available on IBM Bluemix and IBM Cloudant sites. Included in the Bluemix platform to provide analytics services for a wide variety of data types in Bluemix applications, or you can add analytics to your Cloudant JSON data stores from within the Cloudant management interface.

In order to get access to DashDB, you first need to setup an account with IBM BluMix using following link:

Once your account is setup, follow below steps to navigate to the home page of DashDB.

1. Login to your IBM Bluemix account and click on “Create Application”. 

2. Under “Services”, click on “DashDB”. 




3. Provide a “Service Name” and “Credential Name” for your application. 




4. Click on “Open” to see the welcome screen of “dashDB”. 




5. The next screen will show you multiple options from where data can be uploaded into DashDB. 




6. In this example, we are going to select Desktop option to load data of an excel file. Click on “Choose file”. 




7. Locate the path of the data file in your desktop and upload. 




8. If you want, you can also preview data in the file using “Preview” button. If preview is ok, click on “Next”.  




9. Click on “Next” and choose an option to “Create a new table and load”.




10. The next window shows data types assigned to each column. If you want, you can change them by using edit option. If everything looks good, click on “Next”.



11. In the next window, you will see a confirmation message about the data load completion.

12. In this window, you can also have options to filter the data, show (or) hide columns, export the data to CSV, and a refreshing data. 
 

13. In the similar fashion, we can upload data of two more tables “CustomerData” and “Orders”.


14. Now, click on “Connect” and choose “Connection Information” to find out the hostname, port number, database name, user id and password.
 


15. Open IBM DB2 on your local Cognos server >> create a database connection using above connection parameters.






16. Open Cognos Framework Manager >> Create a new project.

17. Under Metadata Source >> Select “Data Sources”.

18. Click on “New” to add data source connection for DashDB.



19. Give the name as “DashDB” (or) any meaningful name.



20. Select database type as “IBM DB2”.


21. Specify DB2 Database Name as “BLUEDB” >> enter the user id and password as shown in the IBM DashDB website.



22. Test the connection.



23. Select the newly created “DashDB” connection.
