Difference between OLTP and OLAP

Relational model involves several dimension and fact tables which are linked together with several joins. Dimensional model involves a concept of cubes or very few tables that contains all the dimension and fact columns at one place.

Relational model is highly expensive in terms of performance. Dimensional model is very effective in terms of performance as it contains summarized data with less joins. In addition, dimensional models support drill-down and drill-up capabilities.
Framework Manager supports OLAP style models with Dimensional Map option however, it is very expensive as Cognos uses heavy SQL in the background to retrieve data and summarize based on the hierarchies and levels created.  These models are usually called as DMR (dimensionally modeled relational) models.

With the  introduction of Dynamic Query Mode, performance of DMR models can be boosted to the level of power cubes by using advanced caching.
