Usage is one of the most
helpful features of reporting in Cognos 8 is that it will auto summarize for
you. This means that it will automatically summarize the numeric values while
grouping by the descriptive information. For instance, if a report writer adds
Product Line, Year, and Revenue to a report, Cognos 8 will assume that the
desired result is to group by the product lines and the years, and to show the
total revenue for those groupings, rather than show the detailed rows of every
sale with the Product Line, Year, and Revenue of that sale. Normally, the
summarized view is what a user wants, so this is good.
The Usage property can be set
to one of the following values:
Identifier: with this setting, a query item will be grouped when
auto-summarizing. Dates and indexed values are set to identifier by Framework
Manager by default.
Attribute: as with identifiers, these query items will be grouped
when auto summarizing. Non-indexed character values are assigned this setting
by default.
Fact: this setting tells Cognos to summarize the value. By
default, non-indexed numeric columns in your source database are set as facts.
